Posts: 19 06/16/05 1:19 AM	Tags : None Anyone got any thoughts about Premier Genista Birch drums. A guy at my work has a 98-99? year model kit for sale REALLY CHEAP. Just wandering what everyone thought about them: sound, durability, live sound, studio sound, quality, quirks, tuning issues, edges, etc........just a good general overview of them. Need to know thoughts pretty soon. Thanks in advance.

Posts: 145 06/16/05 11:53 PM	I came very close to buying a set of Genistas some years ago. In my opinion they are some of the best sounding, mass produced drums out there and even new they were priced right. I played a set side by side to some DWs, Pearl Masters, and Yamaha Maple customs and thought that they out gunned all of them. Believe it or not, the color (a funky orange) was the only reason I didn't buy them. If only I could go back in time... Pick 'em up if it's a good deal!

Posts: 19 06/17/05 8:06 PM	I played on them for a while last night and they sound great other than some of them still having the original heads. I just don't know about them yet. I REALLY want a 60's set of Rogers and a guy I know just happens to have a mint condition set. What do you guys think?

Posts: 145 06/18/05 1:13 PM	It sounds like you're talking about two different things. The Genistas are great modern drums and, being birch, are going to give you a very distinctive, modern sound; lots of attack and volume. The Rogers, on the other hand are going to offer a different sound. For lack of a better term, more vintage; warmer and rounder. Before plunging into either, I would carefully consider the sound you're looking for. A drummer friend of mine calls it "the sound in your head." When you think about drum sounds, what is the sound you "hear?" Define that sound and then find the kit that most closely mimics it. Its work, but you will be more satisified with the results when all is said and done. Good luck!

I've thought of that and have attemped to do that from time to time, but I don't think I have figured it out just yet..........I'm really close but not dead on. I have traditionally like a more warm round tone, but I have only recently been able to play on several different brands and types of shells to help me determine what I am looking for. I know I like vintage and custom kits best and I have a really sweet Medicine Man Acrylic kit now, but there is just something about wood drums that I love. The Med. Mans sound awesome, but I just can't get away from wood. I am really considering the Premier Kit because there is so much that comes with it and the insanely low price tag. It would be more of a buy and immediately resale type of thing unless I continued to play them and fell in love with them or something. I don't know, guess I'll figure it out someday.

Posts: 776 07/07/05 2:24 AM	For whatever reason Premier drums have always gotten left behind on so many levels. I have played the kit you mention and Birch is a whole new world to me. I don't pretend to know much about it as a wood but the kit was great. Well made and the chrome plate on the hardware is almost 3D in its look. If you can pick up the kit for reasonable money I vote yes Gary

Posts: 7 09/15/05 4:20 AM	I have never regretted my purchase of Premier Genista's. Great attack, undersize shells, just enough bottom end frequencies, and a decent amount of versatility in tuning. They have held up well and still compare quite favorably to some of the very best kits out there. Case in point, I also own an expensive set of Sonor Ebony Designers; they are a little better but not by several thousand dollars!!! I like the hardware better on the Premier...I just recorded a couple of tracks with the Genista's on Monday; the sound engineer & I were quite pleased with the sound...I think the older Genista birch snares are O.K. but nothing exceptional (I don't really use it anymore). The birch bass drum (mine is 22") needs to be tuned low with some decent muffling (EQ2 or EMAD are great) to pull out the real punch. All in all - I'd say go for it! Hope this helps! Bob

I can't provide a ton of technical info about them but I will say they sound great and I had no trouble w/ tuning, hardware, etc. I only got rid of them for a maple kit since I play mostly rock music. If you are looking for a super fat/warm sound though, don't get them... otherwise, DO IT.
