Posts: 36 06/20/06 1:24 AM	Tags : None Hey everyone- There's a local band that I know that is looking to buy a drum set. The shop they buy their equipment from sells a lot of Mapex gear and I bet the owner is going to try and sell a Mapex set to the band. I have a few questions about them: What do you guys think of Mapex? Any problems with the hardware? How does the quality of drums compare with their price? Any good/bad experiences playing with Mapex drums? I would like to send this band to someone on this board, but the shop they use will try and give them a good deal; that (the band) says will be hard to beat. If anyone is interested I'll get a price range and see if anyone is willing/able to fit their needs. Thanks for any info guys

Posts: 1827 06/20/06 6:10 PM	Hey Flam, long time no hear. I do not have personal experience with Mapex. I read in Modern Drummer once that they used to have many problems when they first started but that they are much better now (sort of like an Audi). I do know that they have some "not-so-light-weight" endorsers now, including Chris Adler from Lamb Of God; if they can stand up to his punishment, they can't be all bad. My closest inspections are usually in the hardware department - this is what separates the boys from the men, IMHO. Rudy

Posts: 776 06/21/06 1:58 AM	My Nieghbor's faughter has a Mapex Kit that was very reasonable in price. It looks and sounds good. I kinda like the style of the hardware. I don't know what level the kit is but it's very nice for the money. Tell me with all the option today why even pick Mapex? I mean there are tone (rally tons) of Ludeig kits out there with no forseeable shortage of parts etc. Mapex is the new kid on the block. I see many smaller shops with them. They must be offering tons of $ benefits to dealers which is fine. If it's cost may try Pacific Percussion. They have DW behind them and are going to be around for a while. Then there's the sentimental fave Ludwig Good luck. Gary

I could see them picking up a Mapex kit from “their shop” for what they think is a killer deal, because they don’t know about drums (there looking for a full time drummer) and don’t make a wise decision. Posts: 135 06/23/06 3:05 PM	I can give you personal insight on Mapex drums and hardware....I bought an 8pc Pro M series (22" kick, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16" mounted toms, 14" wood snare, 10" stainless popcorn snare) I used all of their hardware mounted on a Gibraltar rack. I used it on the road pretty heavy 3 nights a week. Everything stood up well! They make some of the best hardware that I have ever used (especially like the B-75 boom arms because they have a ball instead of a ratchet and you can get the cymbals right where you need them) All of their cymbal stands use I think they call them "OS" cymbal washers. I have used regular felt washers all of my life so I was leery of them, but I think after using them, they do give you a fuller sound from your cymbals! These are also probably the easiest drum to tune that I have had in a while! And, they didn't seem to get out of tune much due to break down and setting back up. I sold that kit to go with an electronic kit, but will definitely go back with Mapex when I buy another A kit. I have looked at some of the others out there. And if you are looking for best quality for the money in a "store bought" kit, Mapex is definitely one of the better choices! Also, now even their M series is all Maple or Birch (their choice). I am not at all a Mapex dealer, so not trying to sell them anything (you can check my site www.hopedrums.com) I deal in electronic drums.....BUT, I do have a friend in Dallas, TX that I would recommend them checking with for the best price. Posts: 5 07/24/06 11:44 PM	I did A LOT of research before I bought my set. Mapex Pro M. I think it's the best value for the buck out there. Sounds good, looks good, customer service and online questions to mapex - very good. Hardware is very good. I have 10 pc set and don't have any lug buzzes or hardware problems. Not sold on their pedals but who uses the stock pedals anyway...Was going to go with a bigger brand name but now I'm glad i didn't. Mapex seems to be coming into it's own.

Posts: 36 09/28/07 9:53 AM	Update... This band I was helping out ended up buying a Mapex Orion set. It's really hard to judge the sound of the drums because the drummer they are using does not understand drum tuning. Of course, he wont let anyone give him advise. The setup is so anti-ergonomic I can't really play the thing. They think the kit is the greatest thing... at least their happy!! The only think I can really say about the set is they got ripped off. They bought it used from a local shop and payed $4,400!! It's a used shell pack...no stands, no pedals, no snare! I wonder what they could have gotten from a custom builder BRAND NEW for $4,400. Oh well...at least its being used!
