Any one here do backup with a Djembe only?
Any tips, tricks, pointers, cool fills?
Probably be working in Blues or POP areas.

Some of the string pluckers at work would like to play some with just acoustics.

Lou, I bought this book quite a few years back and found it pretty handy for what you're talking about. (Only I use it for congas, not djembe.) Anything
from Dancing Hands is good, IMHO.
http://dancinghands.com/hip_grooves_conga_djembe.html? I don't own a djembe but, if you had a conga, the standard tumbao pattern would fill just about all your needs.

I have a hard time playing hand drums but I have used the nylon brushes on bongos with pretty cool results.

I use a small djembe for quiet acoustic stuff. The Dummies and the Idiots books both have good hand drum basics in them, grooves, fills, and extragroovicular
stuff, and the hand configurations for the different strokes. Once you get the different tones down, you can play more or less the same patterns you would on
the kit, substituting a particular hand stroke for the down & back beats. I found a neat D-shaped jinglebell thingie that fits over the toe of a shoe, and
use it in place of hats/ride/tambourine.
