Posts: 2 01/04/08 2:29 PM	Tags : hoops, snare, aluminum, hardware, trick, satin, chrome Hey guys, considering building my first drum soon (a snare) and stumbled across this forum. It's been of great help so far. Anyhow, I'm wondering if any of you know where I can get my hands on some aluminum hardware to build out my first piece. I see that www.drummaker.com has Trick aluminum lugs and strainers, so thats a great start, but what about hoops? Does anyone know where I could get a 14" 10 hole aluminum hoop? I see that SJC drums offers it as a hoop option on their snares, so I'm assuming they can be purchased somewhere... I got the idea from the DW "satin chrome" hardware like this: http://www.dwdrums.com/drums/toms/finishply/FP-Broken-Glass-w-SC.jpg I'm more interested in the look than anything else. I don't know how aluminum hoops would affect the tone of the drum, but I just want it to match the rest of the hardware and have that DW satin chrome kind of machined look. Any help is really appreciated for a noob!

Posts: 59 01/04/08 7:56 PM	You can also get die cast aluminum hoops from drummaker, look in the hoop section, they are the $$$ big dollar hoops. As far as sound goes, they let the heads ring out a bit longer but not very noticeable (if you ask me) their more of a personal pref. hope this helps.

Posts: 606 01/04/08 10:47 PM	The satin chrome is merely a step in the chroming process. You can actually have ALL of your hardware in the satin chrome finish. Either have it media blasted and re-chromed, stopping at the satin finish, or just have it blasted for the look you want. Going for that look is going to be an expensive proposition, as DW gets a bulk rate, and you won't. The other problem is, 99.99999% of drum goodies are chrome, brass or black. The other problem is, it's actually cheaper to get it satin, than it is for chrome, but you get charged more because it's "custom". I just bought a few DW satin tom clamps at GC, and I was told they list for more than chrome only because they're special order. I got a discount because the guy who ordered them backed out, but they charged him a restocking fee, and charged me their cost. I love the satin look, so I know where you're coming from, but unless you can get hooked up, you're going to spend mucho dinero, and take a lot of time getting all your parts together. Matt

Posts: 59 01/05/08 7:41 PM	If satin is what your going for, I recommend powder coating your hardware. Their are endless colors to pick from. Price can be a factor. If you can find a shop with a low min. under $60 - $70 then thats a good starting price. PC is pretty taugh and I think looks just as good as paint.

As far as I can tell, drummaker.com sells trick lugs(item# 5990r) that are machined aluminum and the trick strainer (item# GS007) in machined aluminum which both give the satin look. The only thing I'm really missing is the hoops. What about marching snare hoops? I think I've seen some marching snare hardware thats either machined aluminum or satin chrome. I have no idea how many lugs those things have, but it might look cool to load up some extra lugs on a regular snare if I had to. I prefer diecast hoops anyway, so I'm already willing to shell out a little extra. If you take a look at SJC's site, you can see the aluminum hoops as an option; really wondering where they get these. Posts: 59 01/08/08 3:51 PM	I see the hoops your talking about, I have seen them before. As far as I know, you can't really get them unless your ordering bulk and their still going to cost $$$$$. Their are some parts distributers in Taiwan the have them.
