1) 8-ply with rings, which would give this kit more attack and a little less resonance (not necessarily bad, because the 8-ply has plenty of resonance.)
2) 6-ply with rings. Should be lower in pitch than 8-ply with rings, but not sure how it would compare to 8-ply no-rings that I already have.
I know a lot of people use 6-ply w/no rings, but I really don't want to do that. I have some 6-ply shells on my electronic mesh-head kit, and they are really thin, and for the bigger drums can get pretty flimsy. I've also heard of some having distortion for larger toms. In any event, if I don't do the rings, I think the 8-ply are plenty thin, have plenty of bottom and resonance, and also extra attack, which I like, but I've already got that kit.
3) Stave shells. I have several stave snares, and like them all, but I don't have any experience with toms/kick.
If I do ply shells, I'll probably do a veneer similar to what I have on my 8-ply kit. But, if I do the staves I will leave them alone. So, while the stave shells will indeed cost more, the veneer will probably cost $200-300 for the ply kit.
So, if anybody has any info to provide on any of the solutions, let the discussion begin!
