Paint/Wrap seam question |
Lead | ||
|
I'm fairly new to this forum but so far it's been very informative and great...anyways, had a question regarding a wrap/paint seam issue... I'm
about to begin building a kit, and I want to make a paint/sparkle wrap/paint (3 stripes) finish on all the drums...i haven't ordered anything yet, or even
started, but I was wondering how to achieve a seamless edge between the paint and wrap stripes... Sorry if I'm not too clear on what I'm trying to
achieve, but I'm assuming there would be a noticeable line if I were to just paint the kit and then wrap it with a sparkle stripe in the middle...for an
example of what i'm trying to do: (1).jpg">http://www.poole-percussi..._orangeinlaykit(

i think the "official" way to do it would be to use a router (?) to sand into the center of the shell, deep enough for the wrap to match up flush
with the shell.
1: measure the width of the stripe you want.

The diagram is the idea that you want.... It will be pretty tough to sand that evenly.
What you want is "inlay cut" .... Just like maple bass hoops you can buy with added inlay. Some suppliers can cut this for you. Its basically the same cutter as what they use for those hoops, as long as they can fence ("hold in") the shell depth you need. You definitely want your exact dimensions of placements and wrap widths to give to them. I would also try to buy all the shells, wraps, and service (inlays) thru the same supplier, for their ease of work. Contact Drummaker.com , Precisiondrums.com , DrumFoundry.com Good Luck! PS: If you are going to paint the shells and topcoat it.... I would do that first and then glue or tape wrap inlays last. You could do it for first and tape over the wrap pieces, but make sure you use painter's masking tape (green automotive 3m is the best) so the chemicals from the paint don't eat thru the tape and then plastic wrap. I do recommend gluing (3m 30n-nf) rather than tape. |
